The best pears for grilling
Any firm pear is suitable for baking – Anjou, Bartlett or Bosc pears. Firm pears retain their shape when baked, while ripe pears become too soft and mushy.
This is why I use Anjou pears which are a firm variety. They stand up well to baked goods, bringing out their natural sweetness. This entire recipe takes about 10 minutes from start to finish.
Apple or pear
Not a fan of pears, or they’re not in season? Try using sweet apples and preparing them the same way. All the same flavors blend beautifully.

Flavor combination
The addition of a hint of sweet honey and the nutty flavor of slightly crunchy toasted pecans, as well as the piney flavor of fresh rosemary, round out the flavors of this dish which all complement each other perfectly.
If you don’t want to use pecans, chopped almonds and walnuts are a great option.
Goat cheese substitute
To balance the rich, tangy flavor of goat cheese, sweet fruit is a must—and as pear season approaches, they’re the perfect pairing. If you prefer, you can swap the goat cheese for cream cheese, which melts just as beautifully.
Serving suggestions
Serve this pear recipe warm or at room temperature as an elegant appetizer, light snack, or light, fruit-based dessert. It pairs beautifully with fresh white wine or sparkling prosecco, and a handful of arugula or baby greens turns it into a simple, fresh salad.

Tips for grilling pears
- Choose the right pears:
Bosc, Anjou, or Bartlett pears retain their shape best when baked. Avoid pears that are too ripe because they will become mushy. - Check doneness:
You want pears that are slightly firm to the touch. If they are too soft, they will fall apart when baked. - Peel or not?
The skin is edible and adds texture and stability. But you can peel it if you want. - Pay attention to baking time:
Bake at a high temperature of 425°F (220°C) for just a few minutes. The cheese should be soft, warm, and the cheese should be melted, but not crumbly. Leave plenty of space between slices in the baking dish. Also use baking paper so it doesn’t stick. - Get creative:
Sprinkle some warm seasonal spices on top like cinnamon or nutmeg or a mixture of both.
