This month’s post in the “Iconic Cars of Cinema” series is none other than the Plymouth Deluxe coupe 1938 Big sleep.
The Noir Classic film directed by Howard Hawks is the first version of the film from the 1939 novel with the same name by Raymond Chandler.
The film stars Humphrey Bogart as iconic private detective Philip Marlowe and Lauren Bacall as Vivian Sternwood Rutledge.
The story is about how both of them navigating the wanderer of Los Angeles in the 1930s.
The film itself is confusing and difficult to follow, because they have to work around taboo subjects such as pornography and homosexuality, etc.
Initially completed in 1945 but was deferred by Warner Brothers for another year, which is another story that I will not face.
Re -shot, re -edited, and revised Big sleep finally released on August 23, 1946.
Cinematic release Big sleep considered as one of the more successful noir films in his time.
This Black and White film is one of my favorites. Evil smart, shed sexual satire, sometimes funny with fast boiled lines.
And of course, to see Bogart and Bacall (only their second film together) doing it on the screen is none other than a cinematic perfection.
Chandler’s dialogue with the help of Brackett, Furthman, and Faulkner Screenwriting made the film NOIR down in the history of legends.
Plymouth’s first appearance was when Marlowe drove through the hill.
Cold, dark, and rain like cats and dogs – we know he follows Gieger extortion because the headlights are not illuminated.
Plymouth is combed with rain, and the house is located in the corner of the Crest Drive and Laverne Terrace.
When he stopped the car and pulled an emergency brake, he crouched in time to see another more luxurious plymouth convertible through it, only to pull into the entrance of the original recipient.
Marlowe jumped out, wearing his trench coat, and walked to 39 Plymouth.
He opened the door to check the registration (which was Carmen Sternwoods) before he returned to his plymouth to squat for the late night.
To accompany him is a trusted Clesterfield cigarette. This is not the first time we have seen Bogart on Plymouth.
In one of the previous theft films Sierra is highHe drove 38 Plymouth Deluxe Coupe.
I somewhat like thinking that Bogart has a preference for plymouth, earth salt, there is no pretension here as a shamus driver everyday.
Among the important items are secret revolver compartments and “B” windshield stickers, which are located on the lower side of the trip.
During the war era, commodities including fuel were rationed – “B” stickers only allow 8 gallons per week.
Can you imagine that? It’s almost not enough to get around the city let alone solve anything!
Quite interesting, law enforcement is given a “X” sticker which allows them to consumption of fuel without limits.
However, if you are completely disguised, it will be a dead gift that you are a copper considering it is general knowledge.

The real reason why I chose this special car was because of the single scene that occurred in Plymouth 2/3rds from the way into the film.
Bogart offered to give Bacall a trip home on Plymouth. From the tone of their conversation, it is clear where it is.
At the decisive time, Bogart kissed Bacall (and he joined romance).
But more importantly, he found the truth about what really happened between the two of them.
I can’t help but reflect on important conversations that I do with friends, family, and lovers – while in a moving vehicle.
In that context, the car becomes a kind of moving truth room, inspires intimacy that may not occur.
This gives enough contrast with this age and age, where the most true intimate conversation is lost in the speed of fast technology.
This plymouth was not considered a cool car in 1938, not my imagination.
In fact, the previous year Plymouth experienced a record year of 566,128 vehicles but in 1938 they fell to 285,704 vehicles.
It is a lighter version of ’37 coupe, but people, including dealers, are not happy with this car.
That is pudgy, the grill is swollen, together with short headlights that will stand out like insect eyes that are installed high on the side of the radiator shell.
But you will not know this Bogart behind the wheel, which makes it as cool as possible and the ideal candidate for this series in the iconic classic car.
